Ryen Sakyi
My name is Ryen Sakyi. I am a second-year student at the Mount. I am writing to you from Buenos Aires, Argentina, as part of the fall 2024 study abroad program.
Buenos Aires is the capital of Argentina. With a population of about fifteen million—one-third of Argentina’s total population—it is a world-class city with lively music, food and people. This is my travelogue about my journey studying abroad here, and for the next couple of months, I will be telling you about it.
I started my journey on Friday, September 23, 2024. My flight was going to leave at 3:15 pm, and I was running late. I made it to the airport 45 minutes before the plane took off. So, I had to check my luggage quickly, do a TSA check and get to my gate number all in less than an hour, and luckily, I made it. I gratefully sat down on my first flight, which was 5 hours, from Washington, D.C. to Bogotá, Colombia. Then on to my second flight, which was 8 hours from Bogotá to Colombia to Buenos Aires. After two long flights, busying myself with sleeping, homework and reading my Bible, I made it to Buenos Aires.
After landing from my second flight, I headed to McDonald's, as one typically does as an American. However, this time, I decided to try a medialuna for the first time—a hot croissant with sweet or savory glaze on top. I was surprised to find that the McDonald's here was fancier than those in America. Once I left the airport, I got a ride to my host family's house, where I will be living for the next couple of months. I caught glimpses of the city through the car window on my ride, and it looked fantastic, especially with a beautiful sunrise as I arrived in
Buenos Aires early in the morning. I met my host family; they are lovely and big readers like me. During my first days with them, we spent our time sitting around, talking about the books we were reading and chatting as I got to know them. They even agreed to teach me Spanish while I am staying here.
Buenos Aires is beautiful. Along with my classmates who are also part of the study abroad program, like me, all from the Mount, we got to go on multiple tours around the city. We got to see the Cabildo Museum, visit the Metropolitan Cathedral, and see La Casa Rosada. We also got to eat amazing foods like empanadas, mate and other Argentinian foods that I will talk about in my next travelogue.
I will cherish these memories I am making while here in Buenos Aires. My trip concludes on Nov. 2, 2024, but Nov. 2 is not here yet. So, as I continue sharing my travel experiences in Buenos Aires. Stay tuned for the upcoming travelogues.
