Men’s Rugby Up to the Challenge

Mount St. Mary’s Men’s Rugby team faced Mary Washington University at a home game. Mary Washington took the lead in the first few moments of the match and was able to begin scoring under the two-minute mark. However, Evan Corbett (C’26) scored two penalty kicks making it a close game. The game stayed neck and neck throughout the rest of the first half.


Corbett scored again and made the conversion, giving the Mount a 13-10 lead. The teams went back and forth on the field, but Mary Washington was able to get the lead back with a score of 17-13. However, Damon James (C’24) scored a try and Corbett got the conversion. Giving the Mount the lead going into halftime. At the start of the second half, the Mount quickly showed that they were not letting up. Corbett converted another penalty kick, furthering the lead.


Mary Washington, however, fought back with their penalty kick, scoring 23-20, Mount leading. ng. Xavier Lock (C’28) showed Mary Washington more trouble by scoring on the Eagles. This was followed by another conversion by Corbett. Mary Washington continued to fight back though, scoring another try, but missing the conversion, bringing the score up to 30-25 Mount leading.


The Mount followed this with their try, from athlete Logan Wild (C’27). The score moved to 37-25, after Corbett scored another kick. Mary Washington scored two more tries but missed both conversions. The score going into the last ten minutes of the game was 37-35, with the Eagles closing the gap on the Mountaineers. However, Corbett scored another try. Mount’s defense remained strong for the final minutes of the intense game, making the final score 44-35. The Mount hopes to carry this momentum for the rest of the season, and into the spring. The Mountaineers will face Belmont Abbey, and St. Bonaventure to end their fall season.
