Growth of Student Organizations

Jenia Engwari

The Mount community has so many Registered Student Organizations (RSOs) that help promote student involvement and inclusion. Diving deeper, we see how the different clubs and student groups take different measures towards success and a safer and more enjoyable Mount community.

In an interview with the Makers House Graduate Assistant Emma Edwards, we spoke about the House’s management strategies, success measures, specific activities and interest as well as status and Edwards had a lot to say about it.

Here's a little background, “The Makers House is a creative space for the entire Mount community. That means that all students, faculty, staff and administrators are welcome to our open studio hours and workshops.

The Mount has developed a one-credit practicum course for students to join if they wish to help out in the House. These students run workshops, clean and take care of the space. Our open hours are from 12-4 p.m. on Fridays, Sundays and Mondays.”

Moving to the main ideas and focus of space and management, Edwards went on to outline the measures.

Club management: “We do not encourage partying of any sort in the space. We are simply here to cultivate a creative community.”

Current status: “Our space is open to the entire Mount community. Students, faculty, staff, administrators, and their families are welcome to our open hours and workshops. All workshops and materials are free.”

Success Measure: “We have recently debuted the Makers Music Lab, a space for students to hang out and make music. Eventually, we would like to provide the community with the means to record music of their own. We run around 30 workshops a semester and host upwards of a thousand students a year, all with different majors and experiences. Workshops include painting, clay pinch pots, furniture repair, crocheting and cooking.”
