Have you heard the latest buzz? Stop and listen, because there is a sizzling new rivalry heating up among Mount students! The campus is in a fry frenzy over the recent ‘Battle of the Fry’ survey that Patriot Dining Hall sent out, with everyone taking sides: Waffle Fries or Potato Wedges? I took on the role of “frystigator,” roaming the campus to get to the bottom of this crispy debate and finding out which fry reigns supreme among students and staff.
The waffle fries received high praise from Madison Mahoney (C’25), who said, “I like the waffle fries because they remind me of the Chick-fil-A fries.” Mahoney added, “I like crispy waffle fries.” Mahoney mentioned she does not favor potato wedges, because she thinks that they are too thick. On the other hand, Carolyn Livingston (C’24) defended the wedges, stating, “I like the potato wedges because they have a much better texture and taste. The waffle fries get very chewy when they’re cold.”
Braden Broadway (C’28) shared his preference, saying, “Waffle fries are better… I just don’t like the texture of the potato wedges.” Caroline Watson (C’28) added, “Waffle fries are crunchier and take up ketchup easier, that’s all I need a fry for.” Justin DiFederico (C’28) chimed in, “The waffle fries are juicy and crispy.” Dr. William Christiansen, a political science and international studies professor at the Mount, said, “The potato wedges are more filling, I feel like you get more food out of it.” Stephanie Cruz-Guzman (C’28) critiqued and said, “The potato wedges taste too much like potatoes.”
Dr. Magdalyn Fiore, an adjunct professor of communication and psychology at the Mount, said, “It’s a tough decision. I’m an equal opportunity fry eater, but between the two, I have to go with waffle fries.” She said, “Not only do waffle fries have a unique shape that provides some visual zest to your meal, but they also offer a nice balance of softness and crunch. You take a bite and are comforted by a warm, soft potato, and then you get a satisfying crunch around the edge.” Fiore stated, “Well, my favorite type of fry is the shoestring fry. It’s light and crunchy. But any potato that comes with salt and ketchup–or Chick-fil-A sauce–is a good friend of mine.” In a head-to-head comparison, Afua Adamu (C’26) and Erika Ryan (C’24) had differing opinions. Ryan preferred the shape of the potato wedges, while Adamu felt the shape was just extra.
Faith Wittig (C’28) confidently backed the waffle fries, while Alysha John (C’28) stood by the potato wedges. Amanda Livingston (C’24) said passionately, “Potato wedges will win the battle. If the waffle fries win, I would not eat them because I have better things to spend my flex on.” Jaila Watson (C’28), a commuter student, broke the feud and said, “I’d probably pack my own lunch, so I don’t know if it would affect me.” Christiansen asserted, “If the waffle fries were to win, I would feel politically underrepresented.”
The Mount’s fry lovers continue to vote for the fry they deem to be best as their hopes boil with anticipation for the survey results.
